Whenever using my wide angle at 18mm you can see the edges of the hood slightly, however anything zoomed in at 25mm or more this lens hood proves efficient! And it's very strong and sturdy (will definitely protect your lens!).

"Generic 55mm and all plastic" 2009-04-02
By Josh Daniel S. Davis (Highland Village, TX)
This is reasonably priced for what it is, but it's a generic threaded hood. The hood ring for a Sony Alpha / Konika-Minolta lense won't be used.

Since the threads are so fine, the coupler REALLY should be aluminum rather than plastic. You need to be very careful when screwing this on so as to not strip the threads on the hood.

There is an adjustment ring on the back which, once you're lined up, you can use as a positive stop for future remove/adds and to help keep the hood from spinning loose.

"Petite, nicely put together, sharp" 2009-11-18
By Chris Cunningham (Lexington, KY USA)
I bought this lens mainly to go with my little Nikon D60, and I've been pleasantly surprised by it. For the roughly $100 I paid for it, it's turned out to be quite a good lens. I originally bought this lens because of it's tiny size. I also own the Nikon 18-55 VR which is a nice lens, but it was just large enough to be extremely difficult to wedge into or pry out of the small case area I have for it, so I thought I would try this lens out. It's enough smaller than the Nikon lens that it fits about perfectly into the case I wanted to carry it in.

Pros:

- the lens feels better constructed than the Nikon 18-55 VR. It's not so much that the Nikon 18-55 is horrible(at least in comparison to other similar lenses), but this lens does feel a bit more solid and above average. Does it matter? Not much to me, although the metal bayonet mount is really nice to find in this price range.

- I can't see any difference in sharpness between this lens and the Nikon 18-55 VR. I'm not saying there isn't any difference, there might be, but I haven't been able to see it. This a good thing, since the Nikon 18-55 that this lens supplanted has been a sharp lens. That's not to imply that this lens is as good as a $1200 pro lens, but in comparison to the other similar lenses I've tried, this little Sigma isn't lacking in the sharpness department.

- it's tiny. It's barely larger than most prime normal lenses.

- focusing seems really fast and precise, more so than the Nikon 18-55 that I own.

- inexpensive.

Cons:

- like all inexpensive, small sized lenses, it has a fairly small maximum aperture, f3.5 at 18mm to f5.6 at 50mm. Not a problem for me, and not really a con, it's a trade-off to get the size down and keep the price reasonable.

- Sadly, no OS. Again, I can live with it the way it is, since VR would make the lens larger, and maybe a little more expensive.

The more I use this little semi-precious gem the more I like it, and the more convinced I am of it's excellent value.

"Great Lens, awsome price, fast shipping" 2009-10-21
By Marco Polo (Detroit, MI)
If you have never owned a sigma they are every bit as good as a Nikon for all but the most demanding professional photographs. I'm sure the expert photographer can tell the difference but my dad (who teaches photography at a local college) swears they are every bit as good for a fraction of the price

"Affordable good performance" 2009-10-05

Right out of the box instructions were easy to follow. Lense quality is fairly good. I thought that for the price I would get something "cheap"; wrong. Very sturdy. Take the time to read the setting instructions and you will get very good/excellent results.

"Decent Lens for the Price" 2009-04-09
By Charles Moore
Pros:

Compact

Light-weight

Good feel/build, looks great too!

Wide coverage of focal lenghts

Cons:

Poor image quality

Loss of contrast

I bought this lens about six months ago for my Nikon D60, despite the fact that it would not auto-focus with my camera. Even when properly focused, I would notice a loss of saturation and contrast at longer focal lengths, and often the effects were beyond the help of photoshop. It was a shame; the lens really felt good in my hands; it was a decent size, good build to it, and the included hood was nice; just lacking in image quality.

"Good for the Amateur - better than your kit lens" 2008-03-13
By A. Joki (Helsinki, Finland)
I bought this for use with a D50. It gave very crisp and full color images. The non-static aperture isn't really a problem for people who want family pictures that are better than an little point and shoot camera can give since likely they won't be shooting manually anyway.

But keep in mind that the reason this is inexpensive is because the aperture doesn't go to a very low number - so it's not as useful indoors. Since the aperture can't go to a low number, it's not good in dark situations or indoors without a speedlight It's spectacular outdoors, however.

This makes a good 'walk around' outdoor lens when paired with a 50mm 1.8 lens for the indoor shots. The 50mm 1.8 lets you do your indoor shots and not get as grainy or out of focus images and is sharp and inexpensive. In contrast, this lets you get those beautiful and rich outdoor shots.

So I recommend this lens for anyone who uses their DSLR on automatic and wants crisper and richer images than their kit lenses can produce. It's a great value for a very useful zoom with a large range. And you definitely won't complain about the image quality outdoors.
